Ojas, in Sanskrit, literally means “vigor”. According to the principles of Ayurveda, it is the essential energy of the body which can be equated with the “fluid of life,” but its existence has not been proven in any way. Those who practice Ayurveda say that Ojas is the sap of one’s life energy which, when sufficient, is equated with immunity and, when deficient, results in weakness, fatigue and ultimately disease. Ojas is both gateway and container. It is the gateway between consciousness and physiology, between spiritual and material. As the subtlest physical, it is a container. It contains the flow of cosmic energy (Prana) from Atman through the individual.
Ojas is primal vigor. Ojas is the subtle energy of water, the stored-up vital reserve, the basis for physical and mental strength and endurance. It holds the body together. It allows the body-mind’s balanced functioning, is responsible for maintaining contentment, luster, strength, health. It is the main factor responsible for immunity.
Ojas is the supreme tejas that evolves from the conversion of the seven dhathus which are Rasa (lymph), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle, meat), Medas (adipose tissue), Asthi (bone), Majja (marrow), and Shukra (semen).
“Hridi tishthati yat shudham raktham eeshat peetakam”
Charaka Samhitha
The ojas is located in the heart and it’s predominantly white, yellowish and reddish in color.
“Prathamam jayathae hi oja shareerae asmin shareerinam
Sarpi varnam madhu rasam laja andhi prajayathae”
Charaka Samhitha
This ojas which is first produced in the body of the human being is in the color of ghee and its taste is like that of the honey and smell like the fried paddy.
“Yannasho niyatham nasho yasmin sah tisthati tisthati”
Ojas is the seat of the prana vayu which embraces the prana in the form of the agni and soma; hence the karma pranaavalambana is dependent on the ojas. The existence of life is dependent on the existence of the ojas.
“Phala pushpebhyoh yatha sambriyathae madhu bhramaraihi
Tadwat oja swakarmebhyoh gunaih sambreeyathae nrunam”
Charaka Samhitha
Just like the bees that collect honey from different fruits and flowers the ojas maintains the human body by virtue of its properties and action.
It’s this ojas that which keeps all the living beings refreshed and no life can exist without ojas. Ojas marks the beginning of the formation of the embryo. It’s the nourishing fluid from the embryo and this enters the heart when the embryo starts its formation. Loss of ojas amounts to the loss of life itself. It sustains life and is located in the heart and also constitutes the essence of all the tissue elements.
“Oja ksheeyatae kopa kshudha adhyashana shoka shramadibhihi”
Astanga Hridayam
Ojas undergoes depletion when a person is angry, when hungry, when consuming food even before digesting previously consumed food, when sad, or when excessively under stress.
When Ojas depletes from the body, the individual gets a feeling of fear & weakness, improper functioning of the sense organs, looses the complexion of the skin, the mind does not function properly, and the rookshatha in the body increases.
“Ojo vividhou dehasya thushti pushti balodya”
Increase of ojas in the body, improves strength, stamina, vigor, and the person will be pleasant always.
It is always the individuals’ duty to maintain ones own ojas in the body and also to preserve the same so that he/she experiences a healthy life.
In Ojas, we are dedicated to provide the therapies to maintain and when necessary, reestablish the balance of the dosas and thereby help our customers enjoy good health.
