Dhara

This is a Shamana (palliative) treatment. The patient is advised to lie on droni with his neck and head comfortably placed. Then a non-stop continuous stream of the prescribed liquid medicine is gently poured on his forehead from a prescribed height through a specially devised apparatus called Dhara Chatti for a period of one to one and a half hours (Oordhwanga Dhara). Dhara is occasionally administered on whole body in special cases (Sarvanga Dhara). The fluid used for this purpose may be medicated oil (Taila Dhara), milk (Ksheera Dhara), butter milk (Takra), tender coconut water or a decoction of herbs (Dhanyamla).

Dhara is effective for several diseases like stress related disorders, sleeplessness and many degenerative brain disorders. Different liquid media are used in Dhara for different diseases.

A typical course of Dhara treatment will be for one to three weeks.

Dhanyaamla Dhara

This is a procedure where the patient is given a dhara with Dhanyaamlam (fermented liquid).

The patient is first massaged with the prescribed oil and then he/she is given the dhara with the dhanyaamlam in a comfortable temperature.
