The Panchakarmas are: Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Vasti (enema), Nasyam (evacuation through nasal route) and Raktamokshana (blood letting). The Panchakarmas are preceded by Purvakriyas, the preparatory procedures as specified by the physician. They involve Snehanam – a course of Abhyangam (oleation), Swedam (fomentation) and Snehapanam, ingestion of medicated ghee (purified butter) or oil.
