Swedana

Swedana or fomentation is one of the foremost Shamana treatments. The swedana can be simple application of steam or fomentation by Pinda, a bolus. The variations in Pinda Sweda (kizhi) are discussed below.

Pinda Sweda

“Tila masha kulatha amla ghritha taila aamisha odanai
        Payasai krsharai mamsai pindaswedam prayojayath”
                                                                      Charaka Samhitha

The literal meaning of the word pinda means bolus. This is used for fomentation needed generally in the diseases which arises due to the vata origin.

The materials used for the preparation of the pinda are mainly Tila (Sesamum), masha (Uradgram), kulatha (Horsegram), sour preparation, leaves of different plants, etc are used for the same.

Procedure
The ingredients are generally fried in neem oil and then they are spread on a piece of square cloth and then tied to make in to a pinda and this is heated in the prescribed medium in a frying pan and then made to pound on the affected part of the body.
