Ayurvedic treatments are broadly classified into two :-
1.samana – palliative treatment.
Includes the administration of internal medicines and also external therapies commonly known as KERELEYA PANCHAKARMA THERAPIES-
2. Shodhana – Cleansing or elimination treatments .2.samana – palliative treatment.
Shodhana is that which expels the dosas out of the body, it includes PANCHAKARMA THERAPIES
- Vamana (Emesis) – That which removes the dosas from the upper parts of the body. Vamana is administered in the condition where kapha has undergone increase, like ingestion of incompatible and uncooked foods, pulmonary tuberculosis, indigestion, loss of appetite, tumor, obesity, dyspnoea, cough, nausea, skin diseases, etc.
Just as the tender seedlings of rice etc., get destroyed by draining out all the water from the plot, so also these diseases will be rooted out completely by vamana.
- Virechana (Purgation to the body) – that which removes the dosas from lower part of the body. Virechana is administered when pitta has undergone increase, like diseases of spleen, hemorrhoids, enlargement of abdomen, intestinal worms, suppression of urine, disorders of semen and vaginal tract, gout, black discoloured patches on the face, pain in the colon, headache, upward movement of vata, constipation, etc.
All these diseases get cured specially by purgation therapy quickly just as the heat inside the kitchen reduces after the removal of fire from it.
- Basti (Enema) – This is made use of for the treatment of the dosas dominated by vata. It is administration of medicine through the anal passage/urethral opening or to the uterus. It is the best among all kinds of therapies because it provides the body with quick nutrition and mitigates the abnormal vata.
It is beneficial in conditions like, stiffness in the joins, lameness, stiffness of the legs, pain in the joints, fractures, contractures, distension of the abdomen with gas, colic, loss of appetite, etc. Enema therapy is of 3 kinds,
- Asthapana basti/The decoction enema – prepared from the combination of different drugs appropriate to the dosas, dusyas etc involved.
- Anuvasana basti/The lubricating enema – this is a kind of enema in which any fatty material is used for the administration of basti.
- Uttara basti/Enema into the urinary bladder or into the Uterus.
- Nasya – Nasal medication – Administration of medicines through nose is called Nasya. Nose is the gateway for the head. It is administered in conditions like, appearance of premature wrinkles on the face, grey hair and baldness, dandruff, pigmentation, dryness of the nose and mouth, loss of voice, diseases of the neck, headache, heaviness in the head, loss of sense of smell, epilepsy, bad taste in the mouth, it is indicated in all the diseases affecting the parts of the body above the shoulders, etc
- Raktha mokshana – Blood letting – To let out the bad blood from the body of the person leeches are used. Mainly done in the conditions like, ulcers, diabetic wound, knee pain etc where there is involvement of dooshita pitta and rakta(impur blood in the body)
